1. Motivation for Choosing the AAE Internship

I have a keen interest in the agricultural sector and hold the belief that agricultural development is the foundation of a country’s overall progress. The AAE Trainee Programme, which centers on researching African local entrepreneurs, allows me to gain an in-depth understanding of the current development status of the African agricultural market. Meanwhile, the China-Africa exchange platform built by the programme can broaden my international perspective, and I can also receive professional feedback from African entrepreneurs, making this an extremely meaningful and valuable internship experience.

3.2Personal Profile Link

3.3Reason for Selection

As a female entrepreneur, Orjiako Vivian Chinasa is a role model for me as a woman. Moreover, as a representative entrepreneur in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, she founded Viviousfarm Enterprise, which mainly engages in catfish and poultry breeding and is a typical local agricultural enterprise in Nigeria with strong industry representativeness. In addition, the enterprise is located in Lagos, and the market opportunities and threats it faces can reflect the common development characteristics of African urban agricultural enterprises to a certain extent, making the research results of high reference value. Finally, in terms of the enterprise’s track, aquaculture and poultry breeding are popular tracks in Nigeria’s agricultural industry with a sound industrial environment, which facilitates an objective analysis of opportunities and threats.

5. Analysis Results: SWOT Analysis of Viviousfarm Enterprise

5.1 Enterprise Overview

Viviousfarm Enterprise is a typical small and medium-sized local agricultural enterprise located in Lagos, Nigeria, whose core businesses include catfish and poultry breeding, as well as the production and sales of organic feed and fresh agricultural products. The enterprise takes sustainable agricultural practices as its core development direction.

5.2 Core External Opportunities

5.2.1 Booming Local Market Demand

With Nigeria’s population growth and accelerated urbanization, the demand for high-quality aquatic and poultry products in Lagos is rising steadily, and there is a gap in local supply. At the same time, consumers’ willingness to pay for green and organic agricultural products is increasing, which provides room for the enterprise’s product upgrading and market expansion.

5.2.2 Government Support from Agricultural Policies

The Nigerian government attaches great importance to food security and has introduced policies such as agricultural microloans, green agricultural subsidies and support for local production and sales to encourage food self-sufficiency. The enterprise can rely on these policies to reduce financing costs and obtain development support.

5.2.3 Empowerment from China-Africa Agricultural Cooperation

China-Africa agricultural cooperation is deepening, with China’s mature breeding technologies and management experience being transferred to Africa, and Chinese-funded enterprises actively laying out in Africa’s agricultural sector. The enterprise can connect with technical resources, seek cooperation opportunities, and broaden its capital and sales channels.

5.2.4 Guidance from the Sustainable Consumption Trend

The global sustainable consumption trend is influencing the Nigerian market, and the demand for ecologically farmed agricultural products is growing among mid-to-high-end consumer groups, supermarkets and catering enterprises in Lagos. With an existing foundation in organic feed production, the enterprise can easily achieve differentiated competition with green products.

5.3 Major External Threats

5.3.1 Fierce Homogeneous Competition in the Industry

The market access threshold for aquaculture and poultry breeding in Nigeria is low, with numerous small and medium-sized breeding enterprises around Lagos engaging in intense price competition. Meanwhile, large enterprises are laying out in the mid-to-high-end market, putting the enterprise at risk of market share dilution.

5.3.2 Fluctuations in Market and Raw Material Prices

Feed raw materials are subject to frequent price fluctuations due to climate and international grain prices, increasing the enterprise’s difficulty in cost control. Agricultural product prices are highly affected by seasons and epidemics, which may easily lead to overstock and price declines, directly impacting profitability.

5.3.3 Inadequate Infrastructure Support

The agricultural cold chain logistics system in Lagos is incomplete, which restricts product fresh-keeping and market radiation. Shortcomings in power and transportation infrastructure increase the enterprise’s operational costs, reduce logistics efficiency and hinder its large-scale development.

5.3.4 Risks of Epidemics and Natural Climate

Nigeria has a variable climate, and natural disasters such as floods and high temperatures are likely to trigger aquatic and poultry epidemics. The local epidemic prevention and control system is not perfect, and a large-scale epidemic would result in heavy losses of the enterprise’s breeding products.

5.3.5 Inadequate Policy Implementation and Industry Supervision

The implementation process of some agricultural support policies is cumbersome and subsidies are disbursed untimely, making it difficult for the enterprise to enjoy policy dividends quickly. The non-standard industry supervision has led some enterprises to produce inferior products in violation of regulations, which disrupts the market order and reduces consumers’ trust in local agricultural products.

5.4 Analysis Summary and Core Suggestions

Viviousfarm Enterprise currently has favorable market demand as well as policy and cooperation opportunities, boasting great development potential. However, it is also facing multiple threats such as peer competition, uncontrollable costs, inadequate infrastructure and natural climate risks. In my opinion, the enterprise should first seize the opportunities: apply for government agricultural subsidies, connect with China-Africa agricultural cooperation resources to introduce advanced technologies, and build brand uniqueness based on its green production foundation to realize differentiation and avoid homogenization. Secondly, it is essential to avoid threats as much as possible: stabilize costs by signing long-term agreements with raw material suppliers, deepen channel cooperation focusing on the core local market in Lagos, and establish a sound epidemic prevention and control system to reduce operational risks. Overall, Viviousfarm Enterprise must accurately seize opportunities and proactively respond to risks to achieve the goal of stable and sustainable development.
