Introduction

This business innovation report is completed during my AAE summer internship which started on August 24, 2026. The task focuses on designing a practical green-oriented business model for local African small and medium-sized enterprises. The selected entrepreneur is Archibald Zele, a South African practitioner engaged in transport logistics and clean energy development. This entrepreneur is chosen because he owns dual industrial advantages in traditional logistics and emerging clean energy sectors. South Africa’s local logistics industry faces widespread high carbon emissions, high fuel costs, and low sustainable competitiveness. Optimizing his business model with green and circular economic strategies can create balanced commercial growth and environmental benefits for local African SMEs.

Current Business Challenges

Archibald Zele’s enterprise operates two core businesses: transportation logistics and clean energy services. Despite his layout in renewable energy, the two business lines operate independently without systematic integration.

First, local logistics operations rely heavily on fossil fuel vehicles, resulting in high operational costs and continuous carbon output. Most South African grassroots logistics SMEs lack standardized low-carbon management, leading to homogeneous competition and limited profit space.

First, integrate clean energy equipment with daily logistics fleets. The enterprise can gradually replace short-distance delivery vehicles with solar-energy-powered transport equipment based on its clean energy technology accumulation. Meanwhile, the company can provide charging and energy-supplying services for surrounding small transport teams, building a new sustainable profit channel.

Second, implement circular supply chain management in daily operation. The enterprise can optimize delivery routes to reduce redundant mileage and carbon emissions. Recyclable cargo packaging materials can be collected, reused, and circulated systematically to cut material costs and lower overall waste generation.

Third, build localized green service positioning. The enterprise can take low-carbon logistics as its core selling point, record real carbon reduction data in daily services, and promote standardized green logistics solutions for South African small merchants and grassroots enterprises. This localized innovation helps form unique market competitiveness.

Expected Outcomes and Conclusion

The optimized green business model fully adapts to the entrepreneur’s original business resources without radical industrial transformation, which greatly reduces operational and trial risks.

In terms of commercial value, differentiated low-carbon logistics services help the enterprise stand out in South Africa’s traditional logistics market and attract sustainable investment resources targeting African green SMEs. In terms of environmental value, the model effectively reduces fossil fuel consumption, vehicle emissions, and solid waste output, contributing to local ecological improvement.
